Apparently, hunting for exoplanets has led to nearly a few misses.

MIT researchers have discovered three "planets" observed using the Kepler space telescope. (Kepler-699b, Kepler-840b and Kepler-854b) tend to be smaller stars. Scientists find it too big - at two to four times the size of Jupiter. They are larger than the largest confirmed planets.
A quarter of Kepler-747b may also be omitted. It is small enough ('just' 1.8 times the size of Jupiter) to be a planet. But it's far enough away that it doesn't get enough light to sustain it. MIT says it's "unbelievable" that 747b is a planet. But you won't want any bets.
The team found the discrepancy after receiving better measurements from the European Space Agency's Gaia Observatory and re-examining the original classification. Astronomers only look for wave distortions at first. But noticed a strange elliptical signal (an ellipsoid that indicates gravity) that was too large for a planet.
