Relatives embody the frequent duckweed, skunk cabbage, calla lily and Jack-in-the-pulpit. During the primary stage, carrion beetles drawn by the stench of demise and human-like body temperatures, creep inside the vase-like construction and unknowingly deposit pollen on the receptive female flowers. During the second stage, the structure begins to collapse, the "fragrance" fades and the insects begin to go out. As they depart, the beetles rub up against the pollen within the male flowers and are now prepared to hold the pollen to a nearby feminine flower. Only a handful of those strange Indonesian plants bloom annually at public gardens worldwide. SDBG is the one recognized backyard within the area that grows this unique species.
